WALKING FOR HEALTH

We are part of the awesome Walking for Health service. We organise weekly walking groups from the church. Our Walking for Health programme was started at the beginning of 2018 by operations manager and former churchwarden Heather Batho, a keen walker who has completed two sections of the Camino de Santiago (minus celebrities and BBC camera crew).

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

“The aim is to encourage everyone to be active, enjoy being out in the fresh air and meet new people in a very relaxed setting,” explains Heather. “The scheme of social prescribing is really helping to combat the biggest problem that so many in our community face, loneliness and isolation.”

And it’s good news for St Austell Healthcare who credit the innovative scheme with reducing GP consultations, helping them to provide more appropriate care for patients through social approaches.

IS IT FOR ME?

You don’t need to be lonely or come with a prescription from your doctor. Some walkers come simply for the pleasure of being in the great outdoors. Some just like meeting new people and old friends and enjoy a natter and a cup of tea afterwards.

There are longer, faster walks and shorter, slower ones too, so there’s something for everyone. We can take groups on the clay trails around St Austell, towards Wheal Martyn or to Menacuddle Well, a recently restored ancient monument with a waterfall.

All that’s missing is you … and you’re very welcome to join us!

OK, I’VE GOT QUESTIONS

I’VE HEARD OF WALKING FOR HEALTH IN THE PRESS, IS IT THE SAME SCHEME?

Walking for Health is a national scheme sponsored by The Ramblers, and supported through funding from the Postcode Lottery and Macmillan. Our local walks are coordinated by St Austell Healthcare in collaboration with the Eden Project.

WHAT WOULD I BE EXPECTED TO DO - I’M NOT VERY FIT?

We walk for up to 90 minutes, but there is always the option to do a shorter version. The walks end back at the church where we have a welcome sit down and a chance to chat over some free refreshments.

WHEN AND WHERE DO THE WALKS TAKE PLACE?

Our walks take place every Tuesday, and always start at Holy Trinity Church. We always leave at 2 pm, so please come about 15 minutes before then..

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

There is no charge for the walk and all you need is a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof coat if it is wet, as we walk whatever the weather.

CAN I BRING MY DOG?

Everybody is welcome, but we regret that we can’t take dogs, except registered guide dogs.
